Joe Barszcz was facing one of those situations in his race shop that you usually see in those car and motorcycle building reality shows.
He had a new dragster that needed to be completed in time for him to haul it from his suburban Indianapolis shop to a local track where he would shake it down for a customer who needed it at an upcoming NHRA national event. Time was short but Barszcz had a plan.
"We still had about 150 to 200 man hours left on the car, and we had to bring in some extra help to get it done," he said. "It took a lot of caffeine too, but that's why there's always plenty of Diet Mountain Dew and Red Bull in the shop fridge. Bottom line, we got the car done and the client was racing that weekend."
Barszcz, a native of south New Jersey, started out as a Funny Car builder working for someone else. Eventually he decided to branch out on his own so he could race himself and build Competition Eliminator dragsters.
Joe Barszcz Race Craft (www.jbracecraft.com) has been in business in Pittsboro, Ind., since 2004, and the shop is steadily gaining a reputation for building quality race cars.

"We want to be a premier chassis builder for an upper-echelon customer," Barszcz said, about the swing-arm, hardtail, and slip-tube Super Comp dragsters he builds, along with Top Eliminator, Top Dragster, and four-link altered cars his shop constructs.
Barszcz said he takes great pride in the materials and craftsmanship that go into his cars. He said he's made great efforts to align his business with top quality suppliers to ensure that every car he builds meets the highest standards.
"We're building driver Dustin Chase a Comp Car right now," Barszcz said. "He dropped a motor off with us and we'll have it back to him as a complete turn-key racecar, completely wired and plumbed and ready to take to the track and race."
Barszcz said his company offers his customers a lot of flexibility with the ability to deliver a race-ready car like Chase's or just a base chassis the customer can finish himself. Barszcz said his own racing endeavors and the time he spends at the track has been a great way of giving potential customers a first-hand look at the quality construction.
"We've sold three or four cars to racers by just being at the track," Barszcz said. "Depending on our suppliers, we can do a base Super Comp car in four to six weeks."
As more of Barszcz's creations hit the track, the possibility of a car his shop built for a customer going head-to-head with his own team's car will increase. But Barszcz said that out on the track all sentimentality and remorse go out the window.
"As a car owner, when you are facing the car in the other lane, all bets are off," he said. "It's every man for himself out there, no matter who built the car."
